The elementary age children use the recently refurbished Fellowship Hall, an 1800+ sq ft room that can accommodate 30 children appropriately distanced. In addition, we have a separate room for K4 and K5 students. The elementary age children use the 9500 sq ft playground.
Curriculum SCDC uses the Richland One curriculum for these children. We provide tutoring as needed to help children learn a concept they find difficult.
During the school year, upon arriving at SCDC, children have an afternoon snack, then work on their homework. If there is no homework, children work on basic skills appropriate for their grade level. When all homework is done, children are allowed free play.
During the summer and school vacations, we use the mornings for refreshing school skills and introducing skills that will be coming up in the classrooms. Summer also includes field trips to active and educational venues.
Our teachers in the Elementary After School classroom are employed by Richland One schools and are teaching children in the school classrooms daily before coming to SCDC.
DSS Ratios 19 children per caregiver (5 year olds) and 23 children per caregiver (6-12 year olds).
Please note:
While schools are in eLearning mode, we limit this class to 20 students and we have three adult staff overseeing the online as well as the seat work.
To support online work, we provide WiFi service to school issued laptops and student owned tablets and we have 12 PCs connected to our internal network for those students who do not yet have their own devices. These PCs have webcams for conferencing with teachers.
For seat work, each student has table space with a 3 sided "sneeze shield." The picture below shows an example. Each table supports only two students.
